Re-imagining the designs for the animal costumes for the new presentation of Zog and the Flying Doctors for 2024, Freckle Productions. Lion, Unicorn, Mermaid and Young Zog. Made by Entify. Zog skin costume also by Entify from the first presentation of the show.
Challenges included making the costumes fit multiple swing situations, with performers of varying heights and measurements. This meant making the larger prop elements adjustable to save needing multiples. The unicorn horn needed to be easily removable and also not fall off during dancing. Magnets were tested and balanced out with thin fabric to get just the right strength.
Reviews:
The Guardian: “The animal patients – all struggling to find their place in the world – are brought to life with some carefully detailed costumes”
“There’s an anxious two-horned unicorn who looks like a slightly frazzled Saturday Night Fever tribute act in his flared trousers and sequined suit. The moment the unicorn finds his voice and brings the young audience with him (Benji clapping and whooping with glee) is a joy. The lonely mermaid waddles about the stage, permanently attached to a giant sea rock, and the sickly lion boasts a spectacular headdress, an explosion of frills and fluffiness.”
Northeastfamilyfun: “Ada was immediately convinced it was the real Zog! Seeing her face light up when she saw him was honestly one of those moments I’ll never forget, just magical.”
